Chair Steve Batt opened the meeting by thanking Julie Linden for
suggesting the speakers for the program. He also announced that
one of
the speakers, Ana-Maria Campos, who was to speak on "Conveying
Information Visually", was ill and was not be able to come to the
meeting.
Meredith Ricker, Government Documents Data Center Coordinator at
University of New Hampshire, gave a presentation on "Data Orienteering:
Locating the Path of Least Resistance". She presented the
problem of
increasing amounts of electronic data being available with more people
wanting the data and discussed potential levels of service which
libraries may want to consider to meet patron needs. Meredith
provided
handouts including a bibliography on Data Services Resources.
She
mentioned one article in particular by Jim Jacobs, "Providing Data
Services for Machine-Readable Information in an Academic Library: Some
Levels of Service". http://ssdc.ucsd.edu/jj/jj.pacs.html
Meredith also
gave a demonstration of searching an ICPSR database. ICPSR
is the
Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research
(http://www.icpsr.umich.edu)
and is the largest social sciences archive in
the world. Membership is required to access the data, but code
books
can be searched without a password.
After a brief break the business meeting was held. The May minutes
were approved.

GPLNE will be cohosting the reception at the Spring Depository Library
Council meeting in Newport, Rhode Island. It was agreed that
a maximum
amount of $500 of GPLNE funds would be used for the reception,
the
exact amount would be dependent on other contributions.
The next GPLNE Meeting announcements will be sent via the U.S. Postal
Service. After that all announcements will be sent via email.
The next meeting is tentatively planned for December 3.
