Sabbatical Research – “Survey of Organizational Models of Large Federal Government Depositories”

A. Purpose of Research
1. Library Reorganization
2. 70%-100% selection – study and analyze operational structure
3. Identify and utilize innovative ideas to benefit UMass Government Documents Dept. to be more efficient and productive

B. Summary of the Report
1. Development of Survey (121 libraries of 70% or more) received 45 responses (37%)
2. Survey questions:
How do you characterize your Government Documents organizational model?
Why did you use the model you did?
If model non-traditional, describe structure.
Has electronic information environment affected your organizational structure?
Problems encountered within the traditional model.
Problems encountered within the non-traditional model.
Have you recently changed your model?
Describe changes and benefits from changes.
What problems have you encountered with changes?
Strategies to resolve problems.
Size of Government Documents staff and job titles.
Has location of government documents affected organizational model?
3. Report on visits: URI, UVM, UCT, UME, UNH, UNC/Chapel Hill, East Carolina U.
4. Traditional and non-traditional organization models
Traditional models – separate collection using SuDoc Class system with technical and public services activities all contained within the department.
Non-traditional – activities are divided among different library departments. The Government Documents collection may or may not be integrated into the library’s collection.

1. Deborah Mongeau: Naval War College and Salve Regina coordinating local arrangements

 a. R.I. state documents group will donate; Marcive will donate
 b. Nelinet being asked – will notify Ralph
 c. Acknowledgment by donors requested/ Poster suggested.
3. Program
 a. Bette Siegel for GoDIG, Boston Library Consortium Government Documents Interest Group sent in six names (Len Adams, program today; IRS librarian, Boston and EPA librarian, Federal Reserve librarian, Boston Office of Census, State Data Center/Miser) to Sheila McGarr of GPO.
 b. Vendor donor list should be included in packages.
