Roger Williams University | Fall 2003 | Middletown High School |
| The ESL E-mail Mentoring project pairs ESL students at Middletown High School with future teachers at Roger Williams University. The project's goals are to assist the ESL students with writing and learning English and to give future teachers a chance to enjoy a multicultural field experience using technology. For more information, please contact Madge Thombs or Luis Oliveira. This semester, students from Mexico, Peru, Bulgaria, Japan, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Brazil, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, and the Phillipines participated. On the final day of the project, the students had the opportunity to meet in person, take photographs and write down some final comments on the project. |

| It was a good experience for me to share a bit of our lives, a great experience that hardly could be repeated. I think that each one of us learned a bit from the other ones. - Sergio ( Mexico) | This project helped me learn about another country that I normally wouldn't have had the chance to learn about. - Ashley C. (mentor) |
| I think this program is a wonderful opportunity to get to know someone from a different culture. I think the program is a great way for students of education to see learning through the eyes of an ESL student. I also found that the program helped me with my English because I had to pay more attention to grammar and explain why something was incorrect, which is not easy. I enjoyed corresponding with a student and was happy I could help someone practice his or her language skills in an enjoyable setting. - Kate (mentor) | It is very good program. Maybe it is a good idea to make the couples be a male and a female in the next years. It really helped me with my writing and I am very grateful with the organizers of the program. - Francisco (Chile) |
| I enjoyed working on the ESL project because I enjoyed learning about another country. I also enjoyed meeting my mentee. – Jennifer (mentor) | I enjoyed the project. It was useful and cool for each other! It was great! I like it so much. – Hristina (Bulgaria) |
| I do really like the idea of starting an improving writing skills program. It was nice to meet someone through a learning program. Also I learned and I improved my writing skills. Thank you very much. - Juan V. (Argentina) | I really enjoyed this project. It was interesting learning about Francisco and his country. I also enjoyed meeting him. - Kerri (mentor) |
| Pizza was good. I'm happy to see Kate. She is pretty. I had a good time. I'm sorry that I can't meet every student. Thanks for coming!! - Minako (Japan) | This project was very interesting. I enjoyed being able to learn about another culture. I would have liked to been able to meet face-to-face more than once. I think that this project was both beneficial to the student as well as to us. - Eliza (mentor) |
| I think that this project is very good because you can meet people from USA and they can help you to learn English, and it is a great opportunity to interact with other kinds of people with different customs. - Alberto (Peru) | I had an awesome time! It was a pleasure to have this opportunity and I hope that Marileiny and everyone else enjoyed it as much as I did. Hopefully I can still keep in contact with her. - Ashley K. (mentor) |
| This was a great experience for both my student and me. We both learned so much about each other and our countries. - Danielle (mentor) | It was a good project. We had a lot to learn from those people so we enjoyed it. Especially the pizza party! - Mohammad (Pakistan) |
| I loved the ESL program. I think that both the student and the tutor benefit from this program. As tutors, we can see differences in cultures from around the world. As students, they benefit from the program and tutor. Overall, this program is wonderful and hopefully will continue through the years. - Shana (mentor) | This project was very helpful to both me and my advisee. Not only did it help improve his writing, but it helped me find mistakes in writing. I would recommend this to any future student. - Mike (mentor) |
| I liked this project very much although I was nervous. I liked my mentor very much and I will look forward to meeting him again. - Abdu (United Arab Emirates) | I liked the project because it's good to write to someone (American) who is going to be a teacher. You help him for his work and I especially like the pizza party. - Alexander (Bulgaria) |
| I really enjoyed the experience I had during the ESL project. I learned a lot about myself and learned new things about another culture. - Ryan (mentor) | This was a great party, or meeting, whatever. I liked to meet Jen, she is a cute person. We couldn't talk a lot, but she showed me some pictures. I'm going to miss all of them, but I learned many things about this class and this meeting, - Armando (Mexico) |
| It was an interesting and nice experience. In one side, they helped us improve our English. In the other, we helped them to practice the skills that they need in their careers. - Juan W. (Chile) | I enjoyed writing e-mails and it improved my writing skills. - Happy Hardy (Philippines) |
