The ESL E-mail Mentoring project pairs ESL students at Middletown High School with future teachers at Roger Williams University. The project's goals are to assist the ESL students with writing and learning English and to give future teachers a chance to enjoy a multicultural field experience using technology. For more information, please contact Madge Thombs or Luis Oliveira.
This semester, students from Japan, Argentina, Russia, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Spain, Greece, Algeria, Germany, and the Phillipines participated. On the final day of the project, the students had the opportunity to meet in person, take photographs and write down some final comments on the project.

Student and Mentor Reflections

Today I met my mentor, Paul. I wrote some emails and he corrected my emails. He did really well and I learned a lot. We ate some pizza and we talked. It was nice. Thank you! Carmela (Spain)

I really enjoyed this program. I was kind of afraid of seeing my partner because I never had this kind of relationship (not seeing at all but emailing). However I learned a lot revising her papers and I was also so glad to see her in person. Miyuki (mentor)

I think the program is very good. Now I know where I make mistakes. That will help me work. Thanks! Petra (Czech Republic)

I really liked participating in the ESL project because it was interesting to learn about the Czech Republic. And I also liked helping Petra with her English. Kelly (mentor)

I definitely enjoyed the ESL mentoring project. I not only got to help improve my student's English, but I also made a really good friend. This project should definitely continue. Nicole C. (mentor)

I thought that this project was very good! I had the opportunity to learn more English and to meet people. I thought it was a very interesting project. Thaissa (Brazil)

It was very nice talking with Miyuki. Pizza was very good. Thank you very much. Minako (Japan)

This program is interesting because I learned English, I wrote English and I met people. Soledad (Argentina)

I think that this program helps ESL students to improve their English. It is also good because we meet new people. Christina (Greece)

I thought that the ESL mentoring program was just there to improve my English. Actually I met new people and had a lot of fun writing the emails. Timothy (Germany)

I'm so glad I met Miyuki today. As I expected, she is a nice person. I think we had a good time today because we talked in Japanese, had some pieces of pizza. And also Minako, who was an exchange student from Japan last year, was here. I'm so happy and want to have a party again. Mizuki (Japan)

I really enjoyed this program. It gave me a chance to learn about another country. I had fun working with Amina and watch her improve with each letter she wrote. Megan (mentor)

I really enjoyed this program and I felt that it helped enhance communication between me and my ESL student. I particularly enjoyed that my student was from Greece and since my father's family lives in Greece I felt a connection with her. Athina (mentor)

I really loved this program because I met some people who speak English and that's so helpful. I like this meeting - it is so interesting. Amina (Algeria)

I though that the ESL project was a great way to get the high school students to work on their grammar and to meet new people as well. I enjoyed getting to meet Dmitriy through the emails and I enjoyed learning about his culture. Rich (mentor)

I really enjoyed the ESL project and I learned a lot about people coming to America for the first time. I was glad I could participate in this project and it was nice to meet my student after all these emails. Paul (mentor)

I thought the ESL mentoring program was a very fun and rewarding project. I met a cool new friend and got to know some other students from RWU. Overall I though this was a really cool and interesting project. Nicole R. (mentor)
