Roger Williams University | Spring 2005 | Middletown High School |
| The ESL E-mail Mentoring project pairs ESL students at Middletown High School with future teachers at Roger Williams University. The project's goals are to assist the ESL students with writing and learning English and to give future teachers a chance to enjoy a multicultural field experience using technology. For more information, please contact Madge Thombs or Luis Oliveira. This semester, students from Japan, Argentina, Russia, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Spain, Greece, Algeria, Germany, El Salvador, and the Phillipines participated. On the final day of the project, the students had the opportunity to meet in person, take photographs and write down some final comments on the project. Students and mentors also recieved a copy of their publication, Cultural Conversations, that contained the final essays from all of the ESL students. Topics this year were "What Makes My Country Unique, "What I Do in My Leisure Time", and "My Plans for the Future". |

| Student and Mentor Reflections |
| This was a wonderful experience. I really enjoyed working with my student and learning about her life. - Rebecca (mentor) I'm very glad to meet Kirsten and other students from college today. Throughout this mentoring program I learned English more and I really like writing about myself now. I want to know more about English and become a good English speaker. - Mizuki (Japan) I really enjoyed being a part of this project. It was good to help a student and be able to get to know them and their culture. - Kirsten T. (mentor) The mentoring program was a lot of fun. It was still a part of school, but it was different. You mailed more to a friend than when you bring your essay to a teacher. - Timothy (Germany) I enjoyed learning about a culture close to mine. The opportunity to learn about Algeria and Amina was a great experience. - Rania (mentor) I think it was a great experience because in Argentina I don't have this and I really like to know people. - Soledad (Argentina) I feel that the ESL mentoring project was extremely rewarding to me as a future teacher and also simply as a person. I loved learning about Thaissa's country and about her! - Jessica (mentor) I believe that the ESL mentoring project was a great opportunity to learn about another person's culture as well as guide a person's learning experience. - Denise (mentor) I have enjoyed my email program and it was an excellent experience. I'm hoping to have ESL again, but my level has met its requirements. - Happy-Hardy (Philippines) This was a great experience because it gave me the opportunity to talk with someone from a totally different culture and learn a lot in the process. As a future teacher, it has definitely impacted my view of teaching. - Kirsten O. (mentor) This project was personally helpful because it allowed me to further advance my skills in teaching ESL, which I have been studying at SRU. It was an interesting, fun, and very positive experience. - Chris (mentor) I like meeting new people. This gives me opportunity to meet people from college. - Petra (Czech Republic) I really enjoyed participating in this program. It was a lot of fun to help the students with their English! I am really lucky to be able to help out and have this excellent experience! - Taryn (mentor) I really enjoyed corresponding with Dmitriy. There was so much to learn from him about Russia and his hobbies. - Elyse (mentor) I think it is good to have this meeting. It is so helpful for us as ESL students to learn more English and also to know other people. - Amina (Algeria) |
